Why Saving Money is Important

By Lisa Fidelis

It's surely not rocket science to realize that this is something everyone should do despite how much you are making. This concept is as old as money itself but an extremely tough one to master considering all the debt that people have succumbed to. Saving that extra dollar, especially when the economy takes a downturn is highly critical but also the most challenging one. What happens if your company decides to downsize and you are laid off or your hours are decreased? These are the times that savings help you get through the worst of financial times and you will thank yourself for doing so. Here are the top 4 reasons why you should be saving money:

1. Plan B- "Saving for a rainy day" is what some call it and if you find yourself on financial life support or have very little funds left in your bank account, then a safety net is vita. Having extra money for those unexpected times like a lay-off at work proves to come in handy when you most require it. Saving money can in many ways, ease the tension and stress that many people have concerning job security so be sure to save whenever you get the chance to.

2. Options- Money set aside opens up many options and opportunities for you down the road, especially if you are already thinking about retirement. When you have that extra $10 or $20 to spend, know that it you could be putting it towards your future. Always be wise about how you spend your money and take a more proactive approach when saving that extra dollar. We now live in an age where our life span has increased and we'll be living longer, which only means that we will need more money to survive. Being financial stable even after your working years are over is what will really enable for you to live a healthy and happy life. Your worries will disappear in the future but you need to save today in order to turn those dreams into a reality.

3. No More Stress- Stress can be considered to go hand in hand with money. Many seem to think that the more money you have the more stress that is involved in your life. There are however, just as many people if not more who believe that having little money leaves a world of burden in your life. It is safe to say that many people would likely live happier lives if they gained financial independence since then you can have and do the things you have always dreamed about but never could. Stress is correlated with many different diseases such as high blood pressure and fatigue so it is a no-brainer at the end of the day on what to do with your money; save, save, and save more.

4. Luxury- Many people who are saving money are doing it so that they can do the things they wanted to without worrying about whether or not they can make rent or if the cable bill will be paid for at the end of the month. All worries aside, those who save can live a more luxurious lifestyle so if you wanted to take some time off and go traveling, that would be a very realistic option. You could buy yourself a new car or be able to afford that gazebo you have always dreamed about as a kid but could never save enough to buy previously. The list of things you could do or buy for yourself is endless really but the main point remains the same in the end and that is to save money whenever you can, wherever you can.

There are numerous ways to save money and it is a very realistic and achievable goal to have if you put your mind to it. With the right mindset and the determination to want to live your life how you want to live it, then it your goals will be attainable. Managing your money and living within the means of your budget is highly important if you want to take your money goals to the next level. Keep in mind that you do not necessarily need to make a fortune every year to be rich; you just need to save a lot more than you spend. Work out a financial plan and if you have a spouse who can help you not only by contributing money to save but also for the emotional support then it will be ten times easier.

Keep Your Identity Safe While Holiday Shopping

By Kathryn Lively

These days, the sense of anxiety that begins the holiday shopping season appears diminished, not so much that people don't plan to shop this year, but because there are more options for gift buying. Once we'd wake at midnight and prepare to hit the stores as early as possible, these days we simply access the Internet for savings. Online shopping for gifts is fun, but if one does it improperly it could hurt as bad as an elbow to the stomach while reaching for that hot toy.

With extended Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales advertised on the major retail websites, online shoppers are certain to spend through the month. The increase in buying, unfortunately, can come with a price not found on any tag. If you're not careful, you can put yourself at risk for identity theft if somebody happens to get a hold of your credit card number.

Stay safe this season. Here are a few simple steps to take to help make this holiday memorable for the joy, rather than headaches, it will bring:

1) Shop at stores you trust - If you are looking for a specific item and see it available on a website you've never before visited, consider searching a bit deeper to see if it's available elsewhere before you buy. Sites that house independent vendors and artists, like eBay and Etsy, have buyer policies listed. Be sure to read them.

2) Look for the lock - If you intend to complete an online payment, make sure the site is secure. Look for the lock icon on your website. If there isn't one and you still wish to purchase, try to make an arrangment through another method of payment.

3) Do not use a bank card - Most bank cards double as credit cards when buying items, but it's best not to use one online if it's attached to a bank account. If you use a service like Paypal, try to use that when possible.

4) Be mindful of e-mail alerts - It's natural to click through an e-mail to an interesting sales item, but watch where you click! If you receive an alert, make sure it's one to which you opted in. Take care not to click through a phishing mail message where your credit card information could be stolen.

Stay safe this holiday season when you shop. Enjoy the sales and mind the spending!

Want to Stretch a Dollar? 5 Ways to Save on Your Grocery Bill

By Debra J Harris

Grocery shopping is one thing that every American does, and it can really cost a lot of money if you have a big family. Finding ways to save can be a blessing to every family and it only takes a couple of easy steps.

5. Start clipping coupons. I know, most people hate coupon clipping, but coupons can save you around 25% of your grocery bill every time you shop! And you don't even have to clip them out of the newspaper! Many grocery stores accept coupons that are found online. You can get coupons loaded onto your mobile phone, or even downloaded to your grocery store's club card.

4. Get a club card with whatever store you shop at, if they offer one. Getting these cards are free, and they give you significant savings on everything in the store. For example, an 8 ounce steak could be $10 without the card and $5.00 with the card. I've seen this happen at my local store! All you have to do is fill out the card and turn it in!

3. Buy in bulk. Buying in bulk allows you to get more bang for your buck. Just try getting your staple pantry items in bulk, nothing else. Anything you know that you use every single week you can get in bulk and save money on in the long run.

2. Make the most out of what you have. A good way to do this is to create more out of what you have. For example, let's say you buy a pack of 4 boneless, skinless, chicken breasts. These are usually pretty pricey, so it comes in handy to make more of what you have. If you take on chicken breast and cut it in half long ways, you now have two breasts. Then, place the chicken breasts in a plastic bag and place a heavy pan on top of it to thin it out. That creates chicken cutlets. If you do this for the entire pack of 4, you now have 8 chicken cutlets that are just as filling as before you cut them in half.

1. Don't go the store hungry. This is really important. When you're hungry, you're more prone to impulse shopping and buying things that you really don't need, and causing your bill to be a lot higher than expected.

Overall, just pay attention to what you are buying. Try making a list of what you need and don't deviate from that. These simple tips should help you save at least a little bit of money when you shop.
